Sporting NE joins United Women's Soccer League

Updated: Feb 8

Sporting Nebraska announces that we will be a part of the United Women’s Soccer (UWS) league starting summer 2022.

UWS is a national pro-am league composed of professionally operated clubs within the United States and Canada. UWS provides high level competition for college players, aspiring and former professionals, and international stars.

The overarching goal of the league is to achieve equality of opportunity for women’s soccer. In a time where there are several professional and amateur leagues for men’s soccer across North America, there is a huge gap that exists between the college and professional ranks on the women’s side. UWS fills that gap by providing a pathway to pro for the amateur player.

“Sporting Nebraska is beyond excited to bring a top-level Women’s team to the Omaha area. Our market is filled with so many great players, several which were part of our youth and competitive programs at Sporting Nebraska and surrounding clubs. The UWS will give players an opportunity to compete at a high level during the summer. We look forward to this new adventure and thank the UWS for bringing us on board.” - Sven Jasinski, Interim Executive Director

Being a part of the UWS is something that Sporting Nebraska has worked hard to make happen. We have a great staff to lead the team. Luke Baxter, our Girls’ Assistant Director of Coaching, will be the head coach. With Luke we have a solid lineup of assistant coaches: Alex Mason, Neil Hope, Kevin Lebahn, and Ben Liesveld. Together along with other members of the club and special guest coaches, this team will have a combined 35+ years of experience. The future is bright for women continuing their pathway in the game. We are proud to be able to bring this to the players.

“We are thrilled to be provided the opportunity to compete in the UWS, beginning May 2022. This team will provide an extension of the club's pathway into the professional game. This team allows us to provide a place for our alumni and offer the opportunity for collegiate players to continue to develop their game during the summer. We are excited for our members and the community of Omaha to have the opportunity to be around the team and create more amazing soccer memories. The UWS offers more than just a team, but a brighter future for female players in the area. My staff and I are excited for this opportunity!” - Luke Baxter, Head Coach

All home games will be played at Papillion Landing. Tryouts for the 2022 team will begin in early spring for the U23 women. More information will be out in the coming weeks. We are looking forward to incorporating this new program with the rest of our club. The pathway continues to grow for players, and we are proud to be a part of the growth in Nebraska.
